Celia Regina

Jessica Zafra on Celia Rodriguez: "I think she’s sensational. Ms. Rodriguez of course is best known to my generation as Valentina, the snake-haired arch-villain in the Darna movie. As a kid I preferred Valentina to Darna because she was more articulate, had a better wardrobe (with the gold turban to cover the writhing snakes on her head), and unlike the superheroine, she did not have to be a mousy wimp when she was off-duty, she was fabulous all the time."

A friend from GMA-7 swears this is a true story. Once, while the staff and crew of "Darna" were preparing to shoot a scene, Celia Rodriguez came out of the dressing room in her reptilian, purplish costume as Braguda, the series' main villain. Passing by the group, she said to no one in particular, in that inimitably husky, imperious voice: "Ano ba'tong costume ko. Mukha akong bayag." Then she glided away.

Gibbs! I love Tita Celia. She is always proud of her BIKOL roots. Im quite close to her older sister Tita Paching (UP European Languages Professor Paz Rodriguez-Hidalgo). I met Tita Celia many times, (sadly) even during wakes involving their family members. She grew up in Sorsogon and was educated by the nuns before she became a model and contract star of Premiere Productions. One time, I visited Jeffrey (Jeturian) on the set of a now-defunct TV series somewhere in Sta. Mesa. Tita Celia turned out to be one of the stars so we had a long chat during the break. During the break, a rising semi-controversial female star arrived late. Worse, the young star created quite a commotion with her army of alalays, make-up artists, drivers, yayas, etc. loitering and chattering in all corners. The commotion delayed the shooting further.

Understated but imperious, Tita Celia quipped (within everybody's hearing distance): HIJO, AT LEAST AKO I HAVE FANS LIKE YOU, PEOPLE WHO THINK, WHO ALSO HAVE SUCH WARM BATHS DAILY. AT LEAST ANG AKING MGA FANS, WHETHER RICH OR POOR, THEY ACT TITULADO AT EDUKADO. HINDI GAYA NG IBA DIYAN.

For a minute, there was silence all over the set.

ey WENDELL, she deserves a book of her own, don't you agree? :) she's really one of a kind, and magkakabayan pa kami! galing niya sa LIGALIG, cesar montano's filmfest movie. ageless talaga ang bruja. :)
