Meme: page 123

Annamanila, here goes:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Turn to page 123.
3. Mark the fifth sentence. Pick up the next three sentences and post. (In other words, post sentence nos. 6-8 on page 123.)
4. Acknowledge the book and the author.
5. Tag 3 people in turn.

Okay, I'm skimming through "Venice Observed" by Mary McCarthy, eight witty, erudite essays on that fabled city and what its history and culture have stood for in art, civilization and the popular imagination. Bought the book for P40 at Book Sale two months ago, and now I'm reading these elegant, evocative lines:

"Caterina Cornaro, a dumpy little gopher-faced lady in her portraits, was the pathetic victim of a series of shams. Browbeaten by the Republic into returning the meaningless crown of Cyprus which the Republic had thrust upon her, she was invited (i.e., forcibly retired) to the hill-town castle with the empty title of 'Lady of Asolo' and a court of eighty serving men and twelve maids of honour. She was allowed a favorite negress, who kept her parrots for her, a dwarf buffoon, hounds, apes, and peacocks."

Carver, Mitz and Ian, you're up next!
