Gantimpala Theater, formerly known as Bulwagang Gantimpala, is one of the original dramatic arts companies of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Its founding president and artistic director is Tony S. Espejo.
It was one of the resident companies of CCP for 10 years, where it experimented with plays that mirrored the life of the Filipino. When it transferred to the Manila Metropolitan Theater, it started to produce and stage the Four Classics: “Ibong Adarna,” “Florante at Laura,” “Kanser (Noli Me Tangere)” and “El Filibusterismo,” the staging of which has become important educational tools for high school students who are studying these Filipino stories and novels.
The theater company is celebrating its 30th season this year by staging, aside from the Four Classics, “Katipunan” by Bonifacio Ilagan, “Taluktok” by Leoncio P. Deriada, “Ramona Reyes ng Forbes Park” by Bienvenido Noriega Jr., and “Bombita” by Tony Perez.
Other productions in the lineup are “Ang Pagong at Ang Matsing,” a children's musical; William Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet;” and “Levi,” the life of National Artist Levi Celerio which will be celebrated through a grand musical-cum-tribute.
