Occupational hazard

As with books, so with theater and movies:

“Over the past ten years I have probably reviewed some 400 books. Perhaps not nine out of ten, but at least half of these were worthless. I didn’t say so at the time. In any event, I could certainly count the number of truly great ones on one hand. Any reviewer faced with such a large amount of product is inevitably, I think, forced into a kind of critical leveling. There is a doping effect. The worthless becomes, by default, the average. The resulting bias is all towards being more positive. Negativity is something we need no protection against. The real enemy is mental resignation--a slough of despair that expresses itself in passive-aggressive critical language requiring special rules of interpretation that 'Quill & Quire' reviews editor Nathan Whitlock likens to Kremlinology. The slightest reservation or withholding of praise, the smallest qualification with regard to some aspect of style, any deviation from the formula of the ready-made blurb, is understood to signify that the book was, in fact, a complete piece of shit.”

Ouch! But so true..I once read a book that was entitled "Fat Minds, Fit Bodies." That is so true in this day and age..how sad!

Buying books is such a matter of luck too ... unless you buy a steinbeck or a walker or gaarder or a williams a buck or a santos (or the classics).. where you more or less know by sheer reading experience and repute. Not even book made into movies are guaranteed good reads. But then of course it's a matter of taste.
