Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” by Dulaang UP

Dulaang UP, on its 32nd theatre season and in celebration of the UP Centennial, stages William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” in English and Filipino, under Jose Estrella’s direction. The Filipino translation, billed as “Paano Man Ang Ibig,” is by the late National Artist for Literature and Theatre Rolando Tinio.

The cast includes Richard Cunanan, Dolly Gutierrez, Mailes Kanapi, Paolo O’Hara, Randy Villarama, Mike Manotoc and Nathasia Garrucha.

One of the most innovative directors in Philippine Theater today, Estrella has directed other Shakespearean plays like “Macbeth,” “Love’s Labour’s Lost” and “A Winter’s Tale,” all showcasing interpretations that are uniquely hers.

In a review of “Love’s Labour’s Lost” (Ang Ligawang Ligaw), writer Cory Llamas observed that she has “carved her own niche of tackling difficult, provocative material, adding new nuances and angles to the more familiar ones.”

Another example of her original style was when she chose the Cordillera region as the setting for “Macbeth,” utilizing the local culture’s music, dance, and costumes for Shakespeare’s drama of royal greed and murder.

“As You Like It/Paano Man Ang Ibig” runs August 29-September 16 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor Palma Hall, UP Diliman, Quezon City. Call 0917-6206224, 0927-8274610, 9261349 or 9205301 loc. 2449. Visit
