The women of 'Dogeaters'

Atlantis Productions’ staging of Jessica Hagedorn’s critically acclaimed play "Dogeaters" will feature some of the Philippines' most acclaimed actresses.

Gina Alajar will be making her English-language stage debut in the multiple roles of the penitent wife, Leonor Ledesma and Lola Narcisa. She last appeared on stage in the Tagalog adaptation of "The Vagina Monologues."

Teresa Herrera, a Fil-Am actress who has appeared in several Hollywood films, will be playing Rio Gonzaga, the balikbayan writer who learns to appreciate her homeland despite its flaws.

Chari Arespacochaga returns to the stage in the dual roles of Pucha and Trini Gamboa. She last appeared on stage in Repertory Philippines’ "Glorious." Ana Bitong, one of the most versatile theatre performers in Manila, will also be playing multiple roles.

"Dogeaters," which played at New York’s Public Theatre in 2001 to rave reviews, tells the story of over 40 people (performed by 16 actors) during the tumultuous administration of President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, Imelda. Funny and heartbreaking, the play is based on Hagedorn's New York Times best-selling novel, which was also nominated for a National Book Award.

"Dogeaters," to be directed by Bobby Garcia, opens November 16 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City. Production design by Mio Infante, lighting Design by Jay Aranda and original musical scoring by ManMan Angsico.

i watched the play last thursday night (nov15) and it was great. the book was kind of heavy but they made it a fun to watch... hahaha. what i am trying to say is that the play has heavy parts (last scenes) but they put some funny scenes and dialogues too. after the show, i heard a lot of comments tho about refunding their money, "the acting was great BUT..." and the like...

Watched it last night, but honestly, I found the play a lil too plain and uninteresting. I would use the word "mediocre" but... to be really fair, there were far better "sit-coms" during the last Virgin Labfest, although there were just 2 amazing plays that i would really take seriously at the Labfest (those that bucked crowd-pleasing conventions)... what went wrong with dogeaters? i am not so sure... great cast, probably tired subject...the guy seated beside me was yawning all the way to tawitawi... and the people minding the lights were busy chatting up upstairs. two of them had phones ringing overtime.
aren't these crews supposed to know that cellphones should be turned off during a run? the other guy's yawn was infectious. good thing, that big actress chari arespachochaga was hilarious. otherwise, it would have been a dull night at the theater.
