Dulaang UP, in celebration of the UP Centennial and in partnership with Buy & Sell Group of Publications, presents Lakbay Dulaang UP, a program that aims to revive the legendary UP Mobile Theater.
Pioneered by the late National Artist for Theater Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero, the UP Mobile Theater was the only university-based theater company that toured the country several decades ago to bring theater to a wide range of Filipino audiences.
Lakbay has the same mission—to bring quality theater productions to different regions of the country. For this year's season, Lakbay Dulaang UP opens with a twinbill production of Guerrero's one-act comedies: “Wanted: A Chaperone” and “Laban ng Basketball.”
"Wanted: A Chaperone" is a hilarious farce about two rich families deeply troubled by their children's "sinful" act: going on a date without a chaperone. Set in a period where prudence, chastity and gallantry were strictly upheld, the play presents us with the warring beliefs of the two families.
"Laban ng Basketball" brings us to a seemingly normal day: a house, a couple soon to be wed, their mothers and the breakfast table. Everything seems to be perfectly in place—except that each family roots for a different basketball team: Ateneo vs. De La Salle. What starts as a friendly discussion about a basketball game becomes a forum to voice out unspoken issues, hurts and regrets—leading to very unsporty repercussions.
These two plays were chosen not only because they are entertaining, but because they tackle questions about Filipino family traditions and issues. Hidden in the laughter is the motivation to disturb the audience and question things we often choose not to talk about.
Lakbay Dulaang UP will be launched on October 1, 2008, with a performance of the twinbill production at Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero theater, 2nd Floor, Palma Hall, UP Diliman, Quezon City. Call 628000 loc. 322, 9003500, or 0928-6515670 and look for Hanna Bautista.
