MusicArtes presents ‘Piaf: Love Conquers All’

MusicArtes Inc., together with BDO, French Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, PCSO and the Buencamino Foundation, presents “Piaf: Love Conquers All,” a musical drama from Tone Poet Productions of New York about the life and music of legendary singer Edith Piaf.

This Asian premiere is slated on October 8 (sponsored by Le Club) at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, and on October 9, 10, and 11, 8p.m., at the Francisco Santiago Hall, BDO South Tower I, HV de la Costa corner Makati Avenue, Makati City.

“Piaf: Love Conquers All” is a story of courage and survival, of Piaf's unmatched passion for song and unwavering faith in love. It depicts the many episodes in Piaf's life—her rise from poverty to superstardom, her struggles with morphine addiction, crippling rheumatism and the painful loss of the love of her life.

Creating Piaf is French Canadian Naomi Emmerson, who renders Piaf's songs with a lovely voice and Gallic authenticity. Carmela Buencamino Sinco, who assists as collaborative pianist, is presently carving a niche in New York and breaking ground on Broadway and film. Roger Peace is the playwright, with design and direction by Ms. Emmerson and Adam Blanshay.

This was staged in New York (off-Broadway) last year. Naomi Emmerson also played the title role. However, this should not be confused with the other stage play, simply titled Piaf, which was mounted by Rep a few years ago. Joy Virata was marvelous as Edith Piaf. In one scene, she even did something I have never seen anywhere else. I was shocked.
