[From Verbatim: Monique Wilson] In 1995, Tanghalang Pilipino's El Filibusterismo (music by Ryan Cayabyab, libretto by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera) was performed in Japan, with Monique Wilson playing Maria Clara. A Japanese record producer, Kaz Ishikawa, was so enthralled by her voice that he invited her to record a CD of Gershwin songs under his label, MusicScape.
The result was Monique Sings Gershwin, a beautifully packaged collection of 16 timeless standards that showcases Ms. Wilson's pristine pipes and dramatic way with song. [The CD is not available commercially. To order, call New Voice Company 8966695/8965497.] Here is Ms. Wilson singing a lovely, wistful version of Someone to Watch Over Me.
[From Verbatim: Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo] In Bart Guingona's staging of Once On This Island last year and early this year [2005-2006], Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo played the role of Erzulie, the goddess of love watching over the tragic lovers Ti Moune (Raki Vega) and Daniel (Jeffrey Hidalgo, replaced by Gian Magdangal in the second run).
Here is an unreleased recording of Ms. Lauchengco-Yulo singing the score's most enchanting song, Part of the Human Heart. (“Her sensuous take on Erzulie's anthem was a true highlight,” I said in my review.)
