Break a leg, Ma-Yi!

It's November 8 on our shores, November 7 in New York--a big day for Ma-Yi Theater Company as it debuts I__NY, a new workshop production by Loy Arcenas, Lonnie Carter and Ralph Peña.

The new play, with contributions from Cindy Cheung, Jennifer Ikeda, Julienne Hanzelka Kim, Alfredo Narciso, Debargo Sanyal, and James Yaegashi, “is a daring exploration of [the stories of] some of the finest, brightest, heartbreakingest and funniest New Yorkers, some born and bred, some newly arrived, some fresh off Cathay Pacific. In English with bursts of Bengali, Japanese, Mandarin and Espagnyol, I__NY is a special mosaic of New Yorkers you rarely, if ever, see on our stages,” says the announcement.

It features Cindy Cheung, Jennifer Ikeda, Julienne Hanzelka Kim, Alfredo Narciso, Debargo Sanyal, and James Yaegashi, with Winnie Lok as production stage manager and Danielle Buccino as assistant stage manager. Direction is by Loy Arcenas, who also mounted the recent Manila run of David Henry Hwang's The Golden Child.

Are you anywhere near TADA! Theater, 15 West 28th Street (between 5th Ave. and Broadway)? Then go watch. It runs Nov. 7-23, 2008, Wed-Sat 8 p.m. and Sun 3 p.m.

Ma-Yi is the same theater company behind the Obie-winning The Romance of Magno Rubio. The opening of I__NY marks the company's 20th anniversary season.

Break a leg, Ralph and company! Here's to 20 more years of groundbreaking Asian-American theater.
