Auditions for Bayanihan dancers

Bayanihan, the National Dance Company of the Philippines, is auditioning men and women at the Conrado Benitez Hall of Philippine Women's University for its roster of dancers, singers and musicians who will perform in local and international tours.

Females who wish to take part in the audition should be at least 5 feet 4 inches tall and at least 24 years old, while males should be 5 feet 8 inches tall and 26 years old above. They can either be students or working professionals. Other requirements for audition are one 2x2 photo, completed application form, a medical certificate, and a certification from the school or employer.

For audition schedules and other details, please call Monette at 5251685 or 5246285.

Bayanihan, the country's premier dance company, has the distinction of being the first Filipino group to break into Broadway and the first non-American dance company to perform at the New York State Theater of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. It is also the first Filipino cultural group to perform in Russia and the People's Republic of China, and the first to make an in-depth tour of South America; the first Filipino dance company to perform at the World Showcase Millennium Village EPCOT, Disneyworld, Florida; and the only Filipino dance company to receive the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award for international understanding.

The dance company has won several awards internationally. Among these are the 12th World Folk Dances Festival World Prize "Primer Premi Mundial" in Palma de Mallorca, Spain; first prize winner at the 7th Gold Bridge Folk dance Competition during the Buyukcekmece Arts and Culture Festival in Istanbul, Turkey; and the Gold Temple award among Gold Temple awardees during the International Folklore Festival's golden anniversary in Sicily, Italy.

Bayanihan is not exclusively for Philippine Women's University students and alumni, although its home is within the university premises. Its forerunner was the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group of the Philippine Women's University, with no less than university president Dr. Helena Z. Benitez as its founder.
