Recording angry, defiant history in the making

Loud and clear. Kelangan pa bang i-memorize yan?!

The solace of mournful spaces: black ribbons all over the CCP lawn

There were two people I couldn't force myself to photograph despite their all-too-conspicuous presence: Imee Marcos and Irene Marcos-Araneta. They got a good amount of camera time, and, fair is fair--they ARE good copy. Still, mawalang galang na, but until their family owns up to the ruin it has brought the country, apologizes and returns the money it owes, I won't cross the line and accord them more than the barest minimum of civility and courtesy. Having them around was a sour note in an otherwise inspiring gathering--and, please, no bull about how the Marcoses were genuine patrons of the arts in their time. That was our money they frittered away on sundry Kasaysayan ng Lahi extravaganzas; it wasn't theirs to lavish on the objects of their passing artistic affections in the first place.

[Note: Some of these pictures will accompany a story on the National Artists protest in the coming Monday, Aug. 10, issue of the Inquirer.]

gibbs... you are not sure of what the marcoses did on what you called pera ng bayan. you should research and ask people or person who are/is close and fair enough to tell you the truth and you will say thank you to them. maybe ang alam mo ay mga saring lamang ng mga bibig. sorry salat yan!... mabuti nalang naging ma-arte si imelda. kung may puot ka sa kanila hanggang ngayon...siguro lubusin mo na ang protesta, "WAG KA NANG TUMUNTONG SA CCP KAHIT KAILAN".

Almost all the previous winners of National Artists Awards are elitists. Gumising at magpakatotoo kayo.

and clarification lang, since you demand that i publish your comment right away: natutulog din po ako. since sunod-sunod ang comment mo, naipon siya while i slept. they had to wait until this mr. blog owner had woken up and checked his e-mail bago sila ma-publish. klaro? now, kwentas klaras since you've demanded something: pakilala ka kaya and not hide behind the anonymous tag? look at you. four nanggalaiti comments full of innuendo and accusation. wala namang problema sa innuendo at accusation--if you at least have the balls to back them up. look at all those faces you're maligning as know-nothing knee-jerk agitators. their collective achievements represent the cream of this nation's artistic works and aspirations. uulitin ko ang head ng post ko, in tagalog this time: siguro naman hindi sila lahat mali? ang siste, there they are, me reklamo, but gutsy enough to show up and show their faces. me pinapakitang mukha, at itinataya ang kanilang pangalan at mga nagawa sa reklamo nila. e ikaw? you come to this blog demanding to be heard, collectively dismissing the whole assembly as nothing more than a bunch of sour grapes, but you want to remain ANONYMOUS? why on earth should anyone, least of all me whose blog has to carry your effluvia, care to believe anything you say?

i will respond only to one point in your diatribe, ANONYMOUS, since it's obvious ikaw naman nagsulat ng 4 comments. why shouldn't i step into ccp when part of my taxes--no, make that my poor mother and father's taxes--went into making the building and the whole complex? AVER? my mother spent all her professional life in government service, most of it under marcos, each payday forced to give up something by way of taxes. my father had to go abroad to work to help support us, but he, too, had to pay taxes. if until now you still can't accept that the marcoses stole from the country despite a forest already having been leveled to print books about their plunder, then i can't help you there. after all, you have a right to make a fool of yourself, too. if the concept of citizenry via taxation is alien to you--by which ordinary people like us demand accountability from people like gloria and other government officials now, they being 'public servants' paid for out of our own damn pockets--oks lang, ikaw naman yan, e. just don't infect the rest of us.

Bravo, Gibbs.

And it was heart-warming to see all those old, familiar faces, still fighting the good fight.

As for Anonymous: I don't think the issue is Caparas himself winning a National Artist award, per se. It is easy to paint the protestors as "elitista" and, truth be told, I had a feeling someone would bring that up even before I saw the comments thread. If this was purely a matter of the "elitists", as you put it, gnashing their teeth over some masa moviemaker suddenly being counted among their ranks, then no one should have raised a flap over Cecile Guidote-Alvarez' win, either. But they did, and they do, and will continue to do so.

It is not the fact that Cecile and Caparas won these awards; it is the manner in which they were awarded them.

One more thing: do you know what argumentum ad hominem means?

And another: CCP does not belong to Meldy. It belongs to the people.
Including you.

and i never get the whole "elitist"/"masa" argument over this. sure, it's all a matter of taste. but when push comes to shove, there's great "masa" art and bad "masa" art. caparas' films are pang-masa, yes -- but they're unfortunately BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD films, not even in the same league as joey gosienfiao. by all known cinematic standards, caparas' films are BAAAAAAAD. just because they're pang-masa does not immediately qualify them for honors. if that's the only qualification, pwes, let's make xerex xaviera a national artist for literature. pang-masa din yun, diba?

First of All, i prithee, PEACE... such silence is deserved of this mournful day.

I would have wanted to say this in my own blog, however for the time being, i reckon this would be the appropriate place to share it.

I am fortunate enough in my lifetime to have learned from two National Artists: first, as a student of Salvador "Badong" Bernal when I was still in theatre school, and under the supervision of the late Leonor Orosa Goquingco -one of the first National Artist Grantees.

I admit, I am one of those people who put National Artists on a pedestal, primarily because even at their age, Badong Bernal can still turn BIC Ballpoint pen crystal casings into chandeliers and bed canopies in one quick set change; and in her late years, Leonor Orosa-Goquingco showed us one last time why she is the original Filipina Creative 'Dancing Queen'

That is why I am passionate about this, because I know what it took to be granted the honor of the Order of the National Artists of this nation. I think we owe it to them and those others that came before, to not take this sitting down.

A beloved friend of mine and former mentor said something so fitting: "Dios mio!

I will get some flak for being an elitist -well, i have gotten some from the "tinga" and dregs of the wannabes and pretenders out there who have been found wanting after their futile attempts at being controversial at my expense- but thou canst begrudge me if that is where I and most of my colleagues are coming from. We do few things but we do them well, that is the initial definition of artistic integrity in my book.

How can they thus, for shame, look over the likes of a Mars Ravelo, a Larry Alcala, a Dolphy for that matter, or even one of the deserved in that list for the likes of one whose contribution to art and popular art is really fit only to wrap 'tinapa' from the local palenque?

How can you have a National Artist for Film and Visual Arts if he never drew those things in the first place? Where is the visual artist in that? and let us not get started on film being another category from cinema... Sin verguenza!!!

And Carlo J. Caparas actually displays no humility about it at all with his reactions... this only goes to show that being "deserved" is far from what I can describe him at present. I can hurl expletives his way, but i reckon he won't comprehend them. Thus amended, I quote Rolando Tinio's translation of one from Shakespeare he might just get: "WALANG MODONG SALANGGAPA!"

thus spake the Barefoot Baklesa

"Let us take charge of the world before i'ts gone as we know it."

Thanks for owning up to the first comment, Ramona. But I agree with Gibbs, pera pa rin yan ng tao at hindi man iyan mismo ang nasayang, marami pang ibang nasayang.

It appeals to the basest of all instincts so it cannot require too much artistry to do.

Kristel said...

Mr. Carlo J. Caparas is very quick to invoke the "elista vs. masa" cliche for someone who resides in Ayala Alabang. F. Sionil Jose is a struggling independent bookstore owner, but he counts among his friends people like Wole Soyinka. Saan dun yung elitist?

theater_soul said...

OBRA!? OBRA?!

This is the National ARTist Award. How will we respect this president's changes to the awardees when it is clear that ART IS NOT ONE OF HER PRIORITIES AS A PRESIDENT?

Three to four digits per show!
