Video: Lea Salonga sings Memory

Not my video, sadly. What the dickens is wrong with YouTube? I've been unable to upload my newer vids. Thanks to thewarrior119 for this clip, the first one to appear online, I think... At the presscon this afternoon for Cats (an Australian production of the Lloyd Webber musical opening in Manila July 2010; Lea will play Grizabella, the faded Glamour Cat), Lea said she's never sung Memory before--not in a concert, album or TV guesting. Enjoy this first look then.

her voice is the most beautiful thing... but I hope she'd work on putting more power to her "Touch Me!" just like how Betty Buckley and Elaine Page did it...

Ms. Salonga hits her notes with technical savvy, but fails miserably in conveying what the song is about. This is not musical theater. This is a nightclub act.

some people, really. this is at a presscon not in the full production -- notice the piano versus full orchestra? and pray tell, what is it that she failed to convey? miserably yet.

Beektur - are you saying the venue alters the message of the song?

annoyingmous -- you were talking about her miserable failure TO CONVEY (i.e, delivery, interpretation, grandness of gesture, stance, etc) the message. now you want to zero in on the message itself. if that's how you argue, i have no time for you. when i watch Bill T. Jone's Fela tonight, you will be but an annoyingmous fleetingf moment . tc!

OA naman iyong renthead. i heard betty buckley's version and those of others. may sarili namang style si lea. i for one was not really expecting much, pero given that this is a presscon, siempre iba ang attack. and for anonymous, siempre iba ang gagawin depende sa venue. kaya nga theater eh.

renthead's comment is purely a fair, personal preference and is entitled to it.

Anonymous 1, as I understand it, is implying that since Memory is a complex song about a dying, old glamor cat, this interpretation doesn't do it for him/her. Fair.

beekatur, the opinion of Anonymous 1 is that for him/her this performance isn't consistent with the meaning of the song in context of the musical it comes from. A fair opinion as well.

Anonymous 2 (not sure if this is the same person as Anonymous 1, btw), asks a qualified question. Should the story, told in song, change if the venue changes?

beekatur and Anonymous 3, as for me, I personally don't think accompaniment or venue should change the message of the writer. The actors job is to "convey" the writer's intention.

I suppose Lea Salonga's performance has its merits and well, demerits. If this press con is supposed to be a sneak peak of the musical Cats, I'm not sure if I agree with the interpretation myself.

Sosyal naman na night club yan, pero in fairness to anonymous na walang oras si beektur pero sumagot naman (taray), agree ako na she's so "technical" as ever to the point that even i know i feel something isn't right, you will forgive her. I will still watch Cats. -Marsha

yung isa hindi kaconvey-han ng message. yung isa nag-extrapolate pa ang glamor and death. yung isa hindi naramdaman ang pain. tapos akala ko message lang, naging story bigla ang demand. that's a bit too much to demand from one song in a presscon, isn't it? baka naman buong season ng isang telenovela ang hinahanap ninyo: a year's worth of tears, hand motions and facial muscular contortions. baka naman kailangan pa ng whiskers at claws para maramdaman ang pain pain na yan. lol. haay. do not judge the singer by one song cover -- she is not a book!

Perhaps Lea forgot, but she HAS performed "Memory" before. It was during her concert in Los Angeles (I believe it was 1992) and I was mesmorized. I have yet to see this Youtube video of her new rendition.

Her voice is different, okay. I mean honestly, her renditions are awesome. Love ya, Lea!
