Tuxqs Rutaquio, who'll be back on stage in February as Ada in Tanghalang Pilipino's umpteenth rerun of Carlo Vergara and Vince De Jesus' Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah, Ze Muzikal at the CCP Little Theater, documented the cast's first day of rehearsals with photos on his FB page. I swiped a few of them--with his permission, of course--so I can break the news on the show's casting. For instance:
It also bears mentioning--Rocky and Eula Valdes, who has said yes to playing the red-haired superheroine once again, are a couple. That should make this, their first extensive pairing onstage, a must-see. (They shared a very brief scene in 2009's Flores Para Los Muertos, the Filipino adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, which TP staged and typhoon Ondoy wreaked havoc on. Eula played Blanche, Rocky was the young male visitor she tried to seduce.)
Another new recruit is Ayen Munji-Laurel, who is set to play Queen Femina Suarestellar Baroux, Zaturnnah's nemesis. She alternates with original cast member Kalila Aguilos, back for another stab at the celestial glamourpuss role. The buzz is that, TP had also called Cherie Gil and offered her the role, but the actress is said to have a full schedule at this time. Imagine that--Cherie Gil as Queen Femina! Ah, the pozzibilitiez!
[Update: Ayen says she won't be able to do Queen Femina anymore as she'll be part of a new GMA teleserye on top of her current work in Beauty Queen.]
PLUS: We've done an Arnold-Lauren face-off here, the two Dodongs singing their own versions of the musical's carrier single, if you will--Ikaw ang Superhero ng Buhay Ko.
Here's something new--an unreleased recording of the song by Alfred Vargas, who played the part in Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah Ze Movie. Unreleased, because at the last minute, director Joel Lamangan asked composer-lyricist Vince to use instead a dubbed version voiced by stage cast member Red Nuestro. So--for your enjoyment, three Dodongs in song! (Thanks, Vince, for the Alfred V. track.)
