Philstage honors four performing arts icons, bares nominees for 2010 Gawad Buhay!

[Complete list of nominees below]

Performing arts icons Ryan Cayabyab, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, Tony Espejo and Tony Mabesa will be conferred the Philstage Natatanging Gawad Buhay honors in the 2010 Gawad Buhay!: The Philstage Awards for the Performing Arts, to be held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines on May 25, 2011, 7 p.m.

Artists and productions of Philstage member-companies will also vie for 44 other performance, creative and technical awards.

Now on its third year, Gawad Buhay! is the first-ever industry awards exclusively for the performing arts juried by an independent panel of critics, scholars, artists and theater enthusiasts. Outstanding individual and group achievements in various artistic and technical aspects of play, musical and dance productions and performances are honored based on quarterly citations deliberated by the jury who are required to watch all productions of Philstage member-companies for the entire year. From the four quarterly citations, the jury selected the final nominees qualified to win the awards by the end of the performance season.

Philstage is the only alliance of professional performing arts organizations in the Philippines. Its members include Ballet Manila, Ballet Philippines, Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM), PETA, Repertory Philippines, Tanghalang Pilipino, Trumpets and Gantimpala Theater Foundation.

Gantimpala Theater Foundation is not a member of Philstage anymore? But they are awarding Tony Espejo?

hi JAKE! what i know is, gantimpala's recurring productions (the 4 classics) are not part of those under jury consideration for the philstage awards--for now. but, yes, tony espejo is a founding member of philstage, and his theater group has been an institution in the industry, hence the recognition. tony mabesa is also, technically, not part of philstage, since dulaang UP isn't. but he also deserves to be honored for his contributions, right? i'd say awards like this for theater pioneers like them are long overdue. :)

You didn't mention Gantimpala, that's why I asked the question. Did you forget them or they are not a member of Philstage anymore?

No recognition for Little Night Music? Legally Blonde?

hi JAKE--i checked with philstage. yes, gantimpala's still an active member. correction done, thanks much! :)

ANONYMOUS--the awards are limited to the member companies of philstage (for now). unfortunately, atlantis productions isn't one yet. let's hope philstage gets to expand soon by having atlantis, new voice company, 9 works theatrical, upstart productions, even dulaang UP, tanghalang ateneo and the like, as new members, so the representation and recognition become truly industry-wide.

Atlantis prod., (the Producer of Little Night and Legally Blonde here in manila) is not a member of Philstage, tama po ba? Pwede siguro sila sa Aliw Awards.
Pero mas excited ako for next years awards. I watched Orosman at Zafira, Zaturnnah, and Caredivas. And more exciting productions to watch for this 2011.

Hi Gibbs,
I'm just visiting, and I would like to watch a play/musical today while in town. Would appreciate if you could provide me with a list of shows running this weekend until next weekend.
Thanks.
Jason

hi JASON! it's summer, so there are very few shows running. only two, in fact: peta's CARE DIVAS and dulaang UP's FAKE. the blog has recent posts on their skeds/show details, so do look around. hope you get to catch them! :)

Apologies to Gantimpala and its members and followers for the omission. Gantimpala remains a member of PHILSTAGE and the omission was due to an inadvertent deletion which was not checked before the announcement was sent out. - PHILSTAGE
