The Woman in Black premieres Oct. 19 at Teatrino Greenhills

Dulaang Kalay ang Word of Mouth Theater Philippines present “The Woman in Black”, a stage adaptation of Susan Hill’s highly regarded 1983 novel of the same name, on October 19, 8 p.m. at Teatrino, Greenhills Promenade, San Juan City. Additional performances are on October 20 at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

In 1989, ITV produced a made-for-television film adaptation of the novel. Directed by Herbert Wise, the film earned four BAFTA awards: Best Design, Best Film Sound, Best Make-Up and Best Original Television Music.

In 1993, BBC Radio 5 aired a special 4-part adaptation, directed by Chris Wallis. BBC Radio 4 subsequently had its own version, written by Mike Walker and directed by John Taylor.

The Manila production of “The Woman in Black” uses the 1987 adaptation by Stephen Mallatratt. The play premiered in the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, North Yorkshire that same year, and moved to London in 1989, where it has since become the second longest-running play on the West End.

A recent film version, directed by James Watkins, starred Daniel Radcliffe as Arthur Kipps.

Dulaang Kalay, the first student organization in Southeast Asia to stage this West End classic, produced and presented an advance engagement of the play last August 31, directed by William Elvin Manzano and starring Jeremy Domingo and Reb Atadero. The two actors will reprise their roles in the Oct. 19-20 shows.

The artistic staff of “The Woman in Black” includes William E. Manzano (direction); Janine Santos (original music); Meliton Roxas Jr. (lighting design); Alden Acosta (sound design); Manu Respall (production design); Nissi Gatan (set design); Lorena Balina (property design); Niña Bedruz (technical direction) and Cha Quebral (deputy technical direction).

The production staff is composed of Gabe Ongkiko (production manager); Nicole Nequinto (deputy production Manager); Raquel Pascua (head stage manager); Chai Von Possel (promotions manager); Toots Tolentino (PR consultant); Ted Guayco (public relations manager); Niqi Granados (front of house manager) and Karina Gaite, Karlo Gaite, and Tim Villa-Real (stagehands).
